Lately, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about seasons. Not the seasons marked by calendars, but the ones life quietly ushers us into without asking whether we’re ready.
When I became a mother, my life naturally revolved around my children. Every decision, every plan, and every dream seemed to include them in some way. Like so many parents, I never questioned it because loving them and caring for them wasn’t a responsibility. It was simply who I was.
Life looks very different now.
The home I live in today isn’t the home where my children were raised. Those years are behind me, but the memories will always be part of who I am. My daughter has been building her own independent life for many years, and my son, although he still lives at home, is an adult with his own responsibilities, friendships, and plans. He doesn’t need me in the same way he once did, and that’s exactly how it should be.
Recently, I’ve found myself watching another chapter begin to unfold. The people I love are preparing for exciting opportunities that may eventually take them farther away than they’ve ever been before. Part of me is incredibly proud because this is what we raise our children to do. We pray that they become independent, confident adults who aren’t afraid to chase the life God has planned for them.
At the same time, I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t been difficult.
For many years, I’ve had the privilege of being actively involved in the daily life of someone I love very much. Being present for the ordinary moments, helping when I was needed, and simply being close became part of my own rhythm of life. The thought that this season may be changing has stirred emotions I wasn’t expecting. It’s not because I want to hold anyone back. It’s because every new beginning for someone we love often means letting go of something we’ve treasured ourselves.
As I’ve prayed about this over the last few weeks, I’ve realized that I wasn’t only grieving change. I was also being invited into a new season of my own.
For so many years, my purpose was wrapped up in caring for other people. I was raising children, helping wherever I could, building a career, and standing beside my husband throughout his incarceration. There was always someone who needed something from me, and I gladly gave what I could because that’s what love does.
Now, for the first time in a long time, I find myself asking a different question.
What does God have planned for me in this next season?
That question has led me to places I never expected.
I went back to school to get my Bachelors in Business. I founded Stronger Than the Sentence™, a platform dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for families impacted by incarceration. I embraced my love of writing in ways I never imagined, and this year, one of the dreams I’ve carried in my heart for a long time will become a reality when my first book is published.
When I look back, I don’t see a woman who was replacing one purpose with another.
I see a woman whose purpose was expanding.
One of the greatest gifts during this season has been realizing that while my children are building the lives we always hoped they would have, my husband and I are still building ours.
People often assume that incarceration places a marriage on hold, but that hasn’t been our experience. We continue dreaming together. We talk about the future, the work we’re both doing today, and the life we still believe God is preparing for us. We encourage one another to keep growing individually while never losing sight of the marriage we’re continuing to nurture, even from a distance.
As I watch my children continue building lives of their own, I’m reminded that my husband and I still have dreams of our own. This season is giving us the opportunity to prepare for the life we’re still believing God has in store for us.
I’ve always believed that God doesn’t waste seasons.
The years I spent raising my children taught me sacrifice, patience, resilience, and unconditional love. This season is teaching me something different. It’s teaching me to trust. It’s teaching me that letting go isn’t about losing the people we love. It’s about allowing them to become who God created them to be while giving ourselves permission to continue becoming who He created us to be.
If I’m honest, there are moments when change feels uncomfortable. I miss being needed in the ways I once was, but I’ve also come to understand that love doesn’t disappear when roles change. It simply finds new ways to show up.
If you find yourself in a quieter season of life, watching your children build families and futures of their own while you’re wondering what comes next, I hope you’ll remember this.
Your purpose didn’t end when theirs began. Maybe this season isn’t about an empty nest at all. Maybe it’s about making room. Making room for the dreams you’ve postponed. Making room to invest in your marriage. Making room to deepen your faith. Making room to discover gifts God has been waiting for you to embrace.
God is still writing your story. The next chapter may not look like the one you’ve just finished, but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful. Sometimes, the quiet isn’t empty.
Sometimes, it’s where God speaks the loudest.
Ecclesiastes 3:1
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
