When I created the logo for Stronger Than the Sentence, I wasn’t looking for something trendy or simply aesthetically pleasing. I wanted something that told a story, our story.
Every detail was intentionally chosen because every detail represents a piece of the journey.
The broken handcuffs symbolize more than incarceration. They represent breaking free from labels, judgment, shame, and the invisible barriers that so many justice-impacted families carry every day. A sentence may define someone’s legal status, but it should never define their humanity.
Growing from the broken ground is a small green seedling. To me, it represents hope. It reminds us that even in the hardest places, life continues to grow. Healing is possible. Purpose can emerge from pain. New beginnings can take root where others see only brokenness.
The rose represents love, grace, and resilience. Love has been the constant throughout my journey. It has survived distance, time, uncertainty, and countless obstacles. Like a rose, love requires patience, care, and the willingness to keep growing despite the thorns.
The city skyline reflects the communities we come from and the countless families whose stories often go untold. Every building represents a home, and within those homes are families quietly carrying burdens that the world rarely sees.
Many people have asked about the initials inside the handcuffs.
The letters S and M are deeply personal. They represent not only our initials but also the bond my husband and I have shared since we were children. Long before incarceration became part of our story, there was friendship, loyalty, and love. Those initials remind me that our relationship was never built around prison walls. It was built on a foundation that existed long before them.
Finally, there is the name.
Stronger Than the Sentence.
Those four words have become more than the title of a website. They have become a declaration.
A declaration that families should not be defined by the incarceration of someone they love.
A declaration that our stories deserve to be told without shame.
A declaration that healing begins when we replace silence with honest conversation.
This logo is more than my brand.
It is my heart.
It is my marriage.
It is my advocacy.
It is my faith that even after brokenness, something beautiful can still grow.
Because families serve time too.
And silence serves no one.
If this logo helps even one family feel seen, understood, or a little less alone, then it has already fulfilled its purpose.
