Hello, and welcome to Stronger Than the Sentence.
My name is Shawndesse Morales, though many in the advocacy community know me affectionately as “Missez M.” I am a healthcare executive with more than 30 years of leadership experience, an advocate for justice-impacted families, a proud mother and grandmother, a lifelong learner, a caregiver, and a writer. Above all, I am a woman who believes in resilience, redemption, and the simple truth that no one should be defined solely by the most difficult chapter of their life.
I am also the wife of an incarcerated individual, though that description alone tells only a small part of our story. He is my childhood sweetheart, my first love, and an extraordinary person whose strength, humanity, and capacity for love continue to inspire me. Our journey has been shaped by difficult circumstances, but it has also been marked by unwavering commitment, growth, and a deep belief that no one should be defined solely by one chapter of their life.
For many years, I hesitated to say those words out loud. Society often attaches stigma to incarceration, and families are frequently judged for circumstances they did not create. I worried that sharing this part of my life would cause people to see only the label and miss the many layers of who we are. But over time, I realized that silence serves no one. Our story, like so many others, is one of love, resilience, and humanity, and it deserves to be told with honesty and without shame.
My husband’s incarceration became part of my story, but it did not diminish my worth, my accomplishments, or my purpose. If anything, it deepened my compassion, strengthened my resilience, and opened my eyes to the hidden struggles of countless families navigating the carceral system. It taught me that behind every sentence is a network of loved ones carrying burdens that often go unseen and unacknowledged.
That realization became the foundation for my advocacy and the inspiration behind Stronger Than the Sentence. I share my story because I believe families deserve to be seen, heard, and treated with dignity. I believe no one should be defined solely by their circumstances, and no family should have to navigate this journey alone.
Why I Created Stronger Than the Sentence
When I began this journey, I had no roadmap.
No one explained how to navigate prison visits, maintain relationships across walls, advocate for my loved one, or manage the emotional toll that incarceration places on families.
I learned through experience, observation, and perseverance.
I created Stronger Than the Sentence to become the person I didn’t have.
This platform exists to ensure that families impacted by incarceration feel:
- seen,
- supported,
- informed,
- and less alone.
Because the truth is:
Families serve time too.
My Professional Background
For more than three decades, I have worked in healthcare leadership, specializing in operations, vendor governance, member experience, and serving vulnerable populations.
Throughout my career, one thing has remained constant:
I have always been drawn to helping people navigate complex systems during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
Today, I see my professional experience and advocacy work as deeply connected. Both are rooted in:
- compassion,
- systems navigation,
- trauma-informed support,
- resilience,
- and the belief that every person deserves dignity and respect.
What I Believe
I believe:
- Families matter.
- Love and loyalty should never be sources of shame.
- Incarceration affects entire families and communities.
- Healing and hope are possible.
- People are more than the worst thing they have ever done.
- No family should have to navigate this journey alone.
Beyond Advocacy
When I am not working, writing, or advocating, I find peace in praying, worshiping, journaling, reading, watching movies, and listening to good music. These simple moments help me slow down, reflect, and recharge so that I can continue showing up for the people and causes that matter most to me.
I have an Associates degree in Criminal Justice and completed my Bachelor’s degree in Business as an adult learner. This was more than an academic accomplishment. It was a reminder that our circumstances do not define our potential and that it is never too late to invest in ourselves. I am a lifelong learner at heart, always seeking opportunities to grow, expand my perspective, and use my experiences to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
My Mission
Through Stronger Than the Sentence, my mission is simple:
To educate, support, and advocate for justice-impacted families while creating a space where people feel seen, heard, and empowered.
Because even in the most difficult seasons of life, we are still allowed to build meaningful lives, find peace, and move forward.
Thank you for being here.
You are not alone.
